About HCRW

The Heart of Carolina Romance Writers is chapter 114 of the Romance Writers of America®. We are located in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/RTP area of North Carolina.

Our Mission Statement:
The Heart of Carolina Romance Writers is a non-profit organization. Our goal is to stimulate interest, inform and educate aspiring, as well as published, writers and to bring together authors, editors, agents, and other related professionals for the mutual benefit of all.

Our purpose is to:
  • promote romance writing by supporting our published writers
  • advise, encourage and educate our aspiring writers
  • provide accurate information about the romance genre to the media
Meetings
Unless otherwise noted on the calendar, we meet on the second Saturday of every month from 1 to 3 p.m. Meetings are preceded by an optional, informal luncheon. Meetings are free to members, except for half- and full-day workshops, for which there is a small fee. Guests may visit two regular meetings before they are required to join.

Our programs, given by published writers and writing or research professionals, have included everything from discussions of the writing business to workshops on developing well-rounded characters. Our past full-day paid workshops have been presented by authors like Lisa Gardner, Jennifer Crusie, Eileen Dreyer, Mary Jo Putney and Alicia Rasley. We have sponsored free workshops to members, led by authors like Kay Hooper, Elizabeth Sinclair and Patricia Van Wie. We bring in experts on various subjects--like medical examiners and DEA agents--to share their expertise.

To see our current list of programs and workshops, check our calendar.

Writing is a solitary business. Becoming a member of a professional writing organization is one of the wisest choices a writer, published or unpublished, can make. Networking and exchanging information in this highly competitive business can be critical to a writer's career. HCRW seeks to meet its members' needs by providing education and support, and professional contacts. We help our members form critique groups. Every effort will be made to help a member find a critique partner or group with commensurate experience.
